Early Treatment Options

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child have their first orthodontic screening by age 7.

Why by age 7?

When the first molars erupt, the posterior occlusion, or back bite, is established. When this occurs, an orthodontist can evaluate the front-to-back and side-to-side relationships. Also, the incisors have begun to erupt, so your orthodontist will be able to detect problems such as crowding, deep bites, open bites and some facial asymmetries.

This early orthodontic screening may prove to be very beneficial for some, while for most, the immediate benefit is simply, peace of mind. We regard those dentists who make timely referrals as well-informed, caring and concerned about the whole well-being of the patient.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

There are numerous benefits for those patients who show clear indications for early orthodontic treatment, including:

  • Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Synchronize the width of the dental arches
  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Reduce the possibility of impacted permanent teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Reducing treatment time with braces
  • Improve self-esteem and aesthetics
  • Improve some speech problems
